SENSORY
Memory Care Center:
A key factor to the Sensory Memory Care Center is a sentence by Moreno: “The body remembers what the minds forget.” Therefore, the goal of the memory care center is to provide pockets of the moment for the patient to remember a joyful memory using the five senses of the body: vision, touch, smell, hearing, and taste. Therefore, the materiality, and design move for this facility are carefully chosen to stimulate body memory. One Material that was carefully chosen is the tile in the inside courtyards. They are chosen for the patient to touch them and remind the patient about their childhood home kitchen with family dinners at home. The memory care center also provides an outside landscape area and space for the patient to circulate with family members or staff. The landscape design incorporated a sensory garden with plants which foster memory recovery. It was previously mentioned that the views from the patient's bedroom look into the nature and quiet beauty of the valley, and this creates a calming environment for the patient's soul. In conclusion, the Sensory Memory Care Center provides a scent of time to a field full of roses.
SITE PLAN
SECTION B
Design Development
Sensory Memory Care Center takes on a linear approach where all four modules feel like one single whole. While each module still presents individual features. The idea behind the approach chosen was directed by a sense of belonging and security. The building is embedded into its site making it feel like it is part of the site. Moreover, the views from the patient's bedroom are carefully directed to face the valley and enlighten the patient's soul throughout the day. Embedding the building into the site also limits access and exits to the building which promotes security for the patients.
